Following the Tithe Commutation Act of 1836, tithe maps were accurately drawn for every parish, showing all the land in the parish. Commissioners were appointed to every parish in order to assess payments, based on land values.

The tithe apportionment schedule is the key to the tithe map. The apportionment introduces the following information:

  • Name of landowner and tenant
  • Description of land, sometimes showing field names
  • State of cultivation such as arable, meadow or pasture
  • Number of acres
  • Amount due, listed in pounds, shillings and pence (£ s d)

Access

Over 1,200 tithe maps with the accompanying apportionment records for the whole of Wales can be accessed and searched on the Library's Places of Wales website.

Facsimilie copies are also available to access in the South Reading Room.
