Art Work by Luned Rhys Parri and Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd Newtown at NLW

From now until the end of March, the Hafan corridor at the National Library will contain an exhibition of two-and three-dimensional art works by pupils of Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd, Newtown, Powys.  The works are all based on the library’s unique collection of photographs by the late Geoff Charles, in particular his memorable images of the people of Capel Celyn, compelled to leave their homes in Cwm Tryweryn in the 1960s.

Many of the pupils at  Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd come from a comparatively anglicised family background. This project has made them aware for the first time of the nature and history of the society which existed here in mid-Wales, as recently as the sixties of the last century.  To accompany the exhibition, an excellent video has been produced by Meic Jones, showing the children at work, directed by the artist Luned Rhys Parri. It reveals that even the scraps of material, used to clothe the figures created by the children, mimics the material and texture of clothes worn by people in Charles’ photographs.

Alongside the exhibition by Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd, personal works on the same theme by Luned Rhys Parri are exhibited in the Hafan Room at the Library.

The project was jointly sponsored by the National Library of Wales and the National Eisteddfod and the exhibition at the Library will continue until the end of March 2012.

Rhodri Morgan, of the Library’s Education Service, was very glad to work with Luned. ‘The 2011 Artist in Residence project with Luned Rhys Parri, was an excellent opportunity for the National Library to work hand in hand with one of Wales’s foremost artists to promote the invaluable Geoff Charles photographic collection. The collection was an excellent opportunity for the pupils at Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd, Newtown, Powys, to learn about some of the seminal events in Welsh twentieth century history. Their 3D work can be seen in the exhibition which documents the successful project,’ said Rhodri Morgan.
