Loss of Professor Geraint

With deep sorrow and a sense of immeasurable loss, the National Library of Wales has learnt of the death of Professor Emeritus R. Geraint Gruffydd MA DPhil DLitt FLSW FBA, at his family home in Aberystwyth.  Without any doubt, Professor Gruffydd was one of the greatest Welsh language and literature scholars of our times.  In 1970 Professor Gruffydd was appointed Professor of Welsh language and literature at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and between 1980 and 1985 he served as Librarian of the National Library. In 1985 he became Director of the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies, until his retirement in 1993.
Our deepest sympathies are with his wife, Eluned and their family. We also realise the loss to Wales as a nation and especially during a period when so many notable figures of Welsh culture and learning have left us.
