Celebrating National Libraries Day at The National Library of Wales

04.02.2016

On Saturday 6th February 2016 we will be celebrating National Libraries Day at The National Library of Wales.

This year is the fifth National Libraries Day – a day of events and activities promoting why libraries matter and the difference that they make to people, families and communities across the UK.

To celebrate National Libraries Day the Friends of the National Library of Wales will be hosting an event in the Drwm theatre at the Library, to which all are invited:

‘A constant succession of workers: the early readers of The National Library of Wales and their reading habits’ will be presented by Calista Williams with Rosemary Thomas, Nan Williams and Daniel Morgan.  Calista is a PhD student based at the Library, whilst Rosemary, Nan and Daniel are all volunteers at the Library who have been helping Calista with her research.

In 1909 The National Library of Wales opened to the public in the Assembly Rooms in Aberystwyth. Over the last two years, volunteers have been recording data from the Library’s readers’ register 1909-12. Calista and the volunteers will present a day in the life of the National Library in 1911, drawing on her research, which explores the connection between the Library and national identity.  It represents a fascinating insight into the impact of the Library in its early years.

The Friends of The National Library of Wales is an association of people eager to support the work of the Library in all ways. It aims to: foster interest in the Library and its work; maintain a fund to enable it to purchase special items, stimulate gifts and bequests and encourage members to be ambassadors for the Library.  The Friends are always keen to welcome new members, but non-members are also invited to attend this event.

We are also very keen to open our doors and welcome new volunteers to the Library. We currently have a range of exciting opportunities on offer, most of which do not require specialist skills, only enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

Even if you are not able to come along on the day, volunteer or join Friends, you can still show your support for the Library by sharing what you love about the Library on social media #librariesday.
