LENS 2016: Conflict

On Saturday 5 November LENS 2016 will take place at The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth. An essential photography festival that no-one with an interest in photography should miss, which will focus this year on Conflict.

From its early days as an event promoting the Library’s visual collections, LENS has grown and developed over the past decade to become a recognised discussion forum for professionals and amateurs alike. It also provides opportunities to enjoy presentations from some of the photographic greats.

This years speakers are:

John Bulmer
John Bulmer was a pioneer of colour photography in the early 1960’s, working for the Sunday Times Magazine from the very first issue up until the 1970’s.

Jon Tonks
Jon Tonks is a British photographer based in Bath, England. His work has been featured in The New York Times & Sunday Times Magazines, The Guardian and FT Weekend Magazines, Monocle, TIME LightBox, Saturday Telegraph Magazine, British Journal of Photography and more.

Abbie Trayler-Smith
Abbie Trayler-Smith is a documentary and portrait photographer whose work draws on an emotional response and engagement with her subject. Her first job was for The Daily Telegraph in London where she spent 8 years covering news and features worldwide, including the Iraq war, the Darfur crisis and the Asian tsunami. 

Ffotoaber (an update)
In autumn 2016 Aberystwyth will again become a hive of photographic activity as the sixth FfotoAber festival will be held. This year again will see the return of the challenging photomarathon and the ever popular schools competition. Winning entries will again be displayed in shops and centres around the town.

Alison Baskerville
Alison Baskerville is a British documentary photographer who uses photography to bring connections to social issues. Providing a platform to create wider conversations that may initiate some form of social change and create greater awareness of those often unable to be represented.

Will Troughton
Our Visual Images Librarian will present news from the National Library of Wales collections.

Mametz Gallery Talk with Aled Rhys Hughes
This exhibition is a visual culmination of the seven years Aled has experienced being at Mametz Wood. In the annual July visits he tried to imbue his images with what he saw, felt and heard whilst walking through the dense undergrowth, the open central ride or the angular, shell laden remains of Strip trench.

Linda Tomos, National Librarian said:
‘Lens is always a pleasurable and interesting get-together for all those interested in photography. We attract professional and amateur photographers as well as people interested in social history. Past speakers at the annual Lens festival have included the world-famous Phillip Jones-Griffiths and David Hurn.’
