14.10.2019

Between 14 October and 8 November, the National Library of Wales will be celebrating its extensive photographic collections with an online campaign and events. During the Focus on Photography month a variety of images and information about photographic collections will be shared on social media platforms.

Each week will deal with a specific theme and the images shared will relate to these themes.  The first week of the month will deal with photography of international importance, looking at the work of photographers, such as Philip Jones Griffiths and others. The second week will focus on the local in the Library’s photographic collections, looking at collections that are of local interest, such as the Glynne Pickford collection, and also D.C. Harries and Guy Hughes. The third week will look at photography of National significance, concentrating on photographers who have worked on a national level documenting Wales, such as Nick Treharne, John Thomas, Geoff Charles and many more. Finally, during the last week we will be looking at what's new in the photographic collection.  During this week, information about new acquisitions to the collections and recently digitised photographic collections will be shared.

As part of the month, 2 events will take place at the Library:

Friday 25 October, 1:00pm

PICKFORD’S ABERYSTWYTH WILL TROUGHTON

A fascinating opportunity to see Aberystwyth as you’ve not seen it before through the lens of the photographer Glynne Pickford. Though most of the output of the business has been lost, enough has survived to give glimpses of the town and surrounding area. In this talk by Will Troughton, Curator of Photography at the Library, there will be a chance to see many pictures that have not been published or seen before and revisit events and scenes long gone.

(This presentation will also be streamed online via the Library’s Twitter account).

Monday 4 November, 1:00pm

THE PEOPLE I MEET, THE THINGS I SEE NICK TREHARNE

A fascinating talk in which photographer Nick Treharne will discuss his approach to photography, which stems from his experience working as a press photographer. In particular, he will talk about his most recent work, which sees him travelling across Wales to record a contemporary portrait of Wales ... In brief, “The people I meet, the things I see”.

Digital photo frames showcasing a selection of images will also be located in various business around Aberystwyth town.

Pedr ap Llwyd, Chief Executive and Librarian of the National Library of Wales said:
“Our photographic collections are an invaluable resource, documenting life in Wales and beyond and are a visual record of periods in time.  We welcome every opportunity to promote the wealth of resources held at the Library and to share our resources with as wide an audience as possible.”

Will Troughton, Curator of Photography at the National Library of Wales said:

“This month gives the National Library the opportunity to publicise some of our vast holdings of photography from Wales and beyond and bring them to the attention of a wider audience.”
