As a charity, the Library relies on a variety of funding sources to support and develop our services, including legacies.

Leaving a gift in your Will

There are many different ways to leave a gift in your Will to the Library, and our charitable status ensures that any gift you make to us will be exempt from inheritance tax.

The most common forms of gift are:

  • Pecuniary bequest - a donation of a fixed sum of money.
  • Residuary bequest - a gift of all or part of the remainder of your estate after all other payments and bequests have been made.
  • Specific bequest - the Library accept bequests of material of our collections

If you are considering leaving specific items to the Library we would welcome the opportunity to discuss your donation before we receive your legacy to ensure it is consistent with our collection policy.

We recommend that you consult a solicitor to ensure your Will is legally valid, reflects your intentions and is up to date. Should you choose to leave a gift to the Library we suggest that the following wording is used in your Will:

I bequeath to the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion SY23 3BU, registered charity number 525775, [the sum of / % of my residuary estate / item specified] to be used by the National Library at its discretion. I further direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other authorised officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my executors.
