Getting Started

The Library is the main repository for family history research in Wales holding a vast number of records useful to the family historian - census returns, probate records, nonconformist records and tithe maps, to name but a few, will help at some point during research. Before you visit some preparation work is needed -

Step 1

Talk to relations and friends of the family for information.

Step 2

Search for evidence within the family to corroborate this information - certificates, photographs, diaries, letters, newspaper cuttings etc.

Step 3

Create and organise the information as a family tree in a clear and concise way, either on paper or using computer software.

Step 4

Arrange a visit to the Library, check the website for opening times, sources available, reader's ticket information etc

Step 5

Why not book one of our Information Sessions. Our reading room staff can provide one to one sessions on a variety of subjects and these can be tailored to fit your requirements
