Welsh Publications

  • We have some early printed volumes e.g. the first printed book to include music in Welsh – ‘Llyfr y Psalmau’, Edmwnd Prys (1621, 1630 and 1638 editions).
  • The Library includes works by Welsh classical composers who gained international recognition such as Grace Williams, Daniel Jones, Alun Hoddinott and William Mathias.
  • The Library also includes popular works including music by Catatonia, Manic Street Preachers and songs by solo artists such as Caryl Parry Jones and Huw Chiswell.
  • We have a number of stars’ biographies e.g. Ivor Novello, Tom Jones, Charlotte Church, Aled Jones and Shirley Bassey.
  • Wales is famous for its choirs and there are plenty of choral works such as anthems and oratorios by composers such as Joseph Parry and T Hopkin Evans.
  • Our tradition of congregational singing is reflected in our collection of hymn books and ‘cymanfa’ programmes. Some come from as far afield as Patagonia and Australia.
  • There are numerous examples of the Welsh song to be found e.g. old favourites such as ‘Arafa don’ and ‘O na byddai’n haf o hyd’ and songs by modern composers such as Dilys Elwyn Edwards, Gareth Glyn and Robat Arwyn.
  • The Library has collected a series of influential magazines such as ‘Y Cerddor Cymreig’, ‘Cerddor y Cymry’, ‘Cronicl y Cerddor’ and ‘Y Cerddor’.
