1934 Spirits from the Vasty Deep

(Extract)

16mm, 1934, 14 minutes, Black & White, Silent, Amateur film, Goronwy Moelwyn Hughes family

Engaging shots of Lloyd George, his wife Margaret and daughter Megan as they participate in one of a series of conferences hosted at Brynawelon (Cricieth) and Bron-y-de (Churt, Surrey) during September and October 1934 to discuss Liberal Party politics and Lloyd George’s New Deal (a programme of economic reform which he launched, without much success, in January 1935). The footage was shot by Goronwy [Ronw] Moelwyn Hughes, who was initially a prospective Liberal parliamentary candidate but became the Labour MP for Carmarthen 1941-45 and for Islington North 1950-51. He married Louise [Lulu] Greer, daughter of judge Frederick Arthur Greer (eldest of the 14 children of a Manxman).
