In 1791 the Presbyterian minister John Williams published an investigation into the story of Madog. Madog, it was believed, in around 1170, founded a Welsh community in America. This volume was the inspiration for John Evans’s extraordinary journey to America where he became the first person to map the river of Missouri. The tale of Madog was used extensively in propaganda campaigns, aimed at attracting mostly Welsh Nonconformists to settle in the ‘New Wales’ in America.
