These resources were produced as part of a joint project led by The National Library of Wales and Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales to commemorate the centenary of the First World War in Wales. Original items from the period from the collections of both institutions were used to create bilingual teaching resources. The resources recount the history of the First World War from a Welsh perspective using primary and secondary materials sourced mainly from Wales.
This project has conducted mass digitization of primary sources relating to the First World War from the Libraries, Special Collections and Archives of Wales.
Welsh Newspapers Online is a free online resource from the National Library of Wales where you can discover millions of articles from the Library’s rich collection of historical newspapers.
The Library has a large collection of maps relating to the First World War, including maps showing the political situation on the eve of the War, military and civilian maps showing the changing frontlines during the War and maps showing the changes to national boundaries which came as a result of the War.
Here we have a manuscript of the ode ‘Yr Arwr’ (The Hero) in the hand of the bard Hedd Wyn (Ellis Humphrey Evans, 1887-1917) which won him the chair at the Birkenhead National Eisteddfod following his death in 1917.
