Letter from Michael D. Jones, 1877

Reference: NLW MS 18181B

Copy by R. Bryn Williams of a long letter from the Rev. Michael D. Jones, 1 Oct. 1877, to the leaders of the Welsh colony begging them to repay part of their debt to him.

In the 1860s, Michael D. Jones along with others who were dissatisfied with the social conditions in their home country, set out on a venture to establish a Welsh colony in Patagonia, South America. He invested financially in the scheme and was declared bankrupt because of debts which he had incurred, which resulted in the sale of his home.
