In 1923, following the horrors of the First World War, the women of Wales organised a remarkable campaign for peace. Close to 400,000 women signed the petition appealing to American women 'from hearth to hearth' to join them in their quest for peace.
In 1924 a delegation, led by Annie Hughes Griffiths, traveled from Wales to America for a two-month long 'Peace Tour'. A wooden chest containing the signatures was presented to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, and the appeal was presented in a beautiful bound volume to the President of the United States.
A century later this epic story continues. The chest and signatures have returned to Wales, and can be seen along with Annie’s diary here in the Library.
