Literary Prize for NLW Staff – Geraint Phillips
One of the Library’s staff, Dr Geraint Phillips, has been awarded the 2011 Sir Ellis Griffiths Memorial Prize for his book, Dyn Heb ei Gyffelyb yn y Byd: Owain Myfyr a’i Gysylltiadau Llenyddol (2010). The prize is awarded by the University of Wales to the person who has produced the best work in Welsh, during the preceding three years, on one of Wales’s writers, artists or craftsmen.
Geraint is a Manuscripts Librarian at the National Library where he has been employed since 1989. His book is the first full study of the life of Owain Myfyr who hailed from Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr in Denbighshire. Owain Myfyr was a successful skinner, patron of literature and a leading figure in London Welsh circles at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries. Geraint’s volume has been praised for its combination of insightful scholarship and narrative drive.
Author and broadcaster, Vaughan Hughes wrote;
‘This is a gripping story well told.’
Peredur Lynch wrote of the book in Barn magazine;
‘Dr Phillips has produced a work of substance and elegance ... What gives this book its particular tension is the excellent work the author has done in detailing the relationship between Owain Myfyr and Iolo Morganwg’.
