Work by Anglesey born artist, Jac Jones displayed at The National Library of Wales
A delightful collection of work by Anglesey-born Children’s author and illustrator Jac Jones who recently received the Mary Vaughan Jones Award will be on display at the National Library of Wales between 8 December 2012 and 22 June 2013.
Over the years, he has illustrated more than four hundred children’s books and is best known for creating the character Jac y Jwc in 1977 as part of the Sali Mali evergreen classic. Amongst the other characters that he has created are Mudiad Meithrin’s Mabon and Mabli, and Twmff y Gath in the children’s magazine WCW a’i Ffrindiau. He has also created graphics for dozens of television programmes.
Nia Lewis, who curated the exhibition said:
‘Jac Jones has made a huge contribution to children’s literature in Wales. It is a privilege to have his work displayed here at The National Library of Wales, and we hope that many will come and see a selection of his work being exhibited here’
Although each book that Jac works on is important to him, contributing to some high-profile titles has been a very special experience. Amongst these titles he lists Chwedlau Grimm, adapted by Dyddgu Owen, and Drama’r Nadolig by Gwyn Thomas. A section of the artwork that he created for Lleuad yn Olau has been included in Premi de Catalonia, a directory of children’s illustrators of the world.
Jac Jones received the Mary Vaughan Jones 2012 Award. This prestigious award is presented once every three years to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to children’s books in Wales over a considerable period of time.
Artist Jac Jones said:
‘I am both delighted and honoured that an exhibition of the art I have produced over time for Welsh Book publications have been arranged by The National Library of Wales. Where better to show my work than in an Institution that is a cornerstone synonymous with excellence and standard which promotes and projects our Welsh heritage on the written page.’
The exhibition is held in the Hafan area of the National Library which is mainly used by the Education Service.
The National Library of Wales Education Service was established in 2002 and their core duties are to present the Library and the collections to visitors of all ages who are part of the formal learning community. They do this by providing access to the collection and interpretation of items to school pupils, students, lifelong learners and home schooling families, and learning resources for teachers, parents and lecturers.
