Augusta Hall, or Lady Llanover was a prominent sponsor of Welsh folk culture. Although her knowledge of the Welsh language was vague, Hall was very enthusiastic about all things Welsh. She had a lasting influence on the design of the Welsh national costume which stemmed from her prize winning essay at the Gwent and Dyfed Royal Eisteddfod and Musical Festival, held at Cardiff in August 1834. Her ‘Good Cookery … and Recipes communicated by the Hermit of the Cell of St. Gover’, published in 1867, is a volume of Welsh tales and recipes. It is structured around the conversations of a traveller to Llanover and the hermit of Llanover. Hall’s illustrations of the food are included in the volume as well as coloured plates showing female Welsh costumes.
