Anti-racist Wales Action Plan Projects - Impact Survey

21 August 2025

Since the enactment of the Wales Anti-Racist Action Plan in 2022, the National Library of Wales like many other institutions across the country has embarked on several projects aimed at bringing meaningful change and impact to all its users.

The Welsh Government released the Wales Anti-Racist plan after a lengthy period of consultation and engagement with various communities. This action plan was borne out of necessity, and it was set out to combat structural inequalities to make measurable changes in the lives of Black, Asian, and other ethnicities in Wales with the hope achieving a Wales free of racism by the year 2030 through practical approaches.

Some of the initiatives by the National Library of Wales include exhibitions that foster a deeper understanding of Black history and Asian people and culture, exploring themes such as music, art, education, empire, and the dismantling of harmful stereotypes. As part of its anti-racist efforts, the Library also commissioned artists from under-represented communities to create artworks, which have since been added to its collections.

To further promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Dictionary of Welsh Biography is being continuously updated to ensure it reflects an authentic and inclusive portrayal of Wales and not just a singular perspective. Additionally, the "Wales and the World" calendar has been introduced. This calendar features a blend of religious festivals and key dates related to equality, diversity and inclusion. It is not intended to be exhaustive, and staff are encouraged to suggest other significant dates for inclusion.

Furthermore, the Library has actively engaged with diverse communities, hosting celebrations and workshops within its premises. It has also conducted outreach programmes across Wales, co-created educational materials, supported communities with its expertise, and most importantly welcomed and enjoyed participation.

The National Library of Wales is now in the process of evaluating its activities with a survey, which aims to gather valuable insights on the various projects the Library has held in response to the Wales Anti Racist Action Plan since it was passed in 2022. Your feedback is crucial in helping us understand our shortfalls and how best to serve you. This also contributes to how we develop and shape future projects to be practical and impactful to all the communities we serve.

The survey will take approximately four minutes to complete. All responses are confidential and will be used solely for research purposes. We appreciate your time and participation.
