Celebrating 850 years of Dreaming Big: a new resource inspired by the first Eisteddfod

9 July 2026

This year, we mark a truly special milestone, 850 years since the first Eisteddfod was held by Lord Rhys at Cardigan Castle in 1176.

8 and a half centuries later, the Eisteddfod is far more than a festival. It is a living celebration of who we are as a nation, our language, our creativity, our talent and our confidence.

To help schools and educational settings celebrate this historic occasion, the National Library of Wales has developed an exciting learning resource that invites learners to explore this remarkable journey through a wealth of trusted historical sources from Wales’s national collections. Through stories, images and unique documents, learners can discover how the Eisteddfod has helped to shape Welsh identity and values across the centuries.

The resource aligns naturally with the Curriculum for Wales, supporting learners to understand their cynefin, appreciate their heritage, and develop as ambitious, creative and informed citizens. It demonstrates that culture is something that belongs to everyone, not simply something to study, but something to experience, create and enjoy.

Join us in celebrating 850 years of competition, creativity and community, and the vision of Lord Rhys, whose legacy continues to inspire Wales today. Suitable for a wide range of ages, the resource provides valuable opportunities to deepen understanding of Welsh history, identity and heritage.
