On Tuesday this week, the Screen and Sound Digitisation and Curatorial teams hosted the first of two open days as part of the Film Skills for the Future project.
In August, the Digitisation team secured funding from the British Film Institute and the National Lottery to enhance the technical capabilities of our staff. This funding supports targeted training in film handling, inspection, digitisation, and post-production. The project’s aim is to build resilience within the digitisation team and develop a more agile, skilled, and adaptable workforce, ready to tackle a wide range of audio-visual preservation challenges.
To broaden the project’s impact beyond the Library, we introduced two public open days. These events were designed to help us engage with students, film enthusiasts and heritage professionals. It was also a way of welcoming new people to discover the specialist work carried out by our teams.
The first open day featured a mix of talks, guided tours of the audio-visual technical block, and hands-on sessions for attendees. It was very well received, with several of the attendees saying that this was their first time visiting the library.
The second open day will take place in Spring next year, with a focus on professionals working in the Welsh heritage sector, providing practical guidance on managing, handling and digitising audio-visual collections.
