From the Stacks – An addition to the Arthurian Collection

5 August 2024

The latest find from our legacy collection is a deluxe edition of ‘King Arthur's Wood: a fairy story: and with it the tale re-told of Sir Gareth of Orkney and ye Ladye of ye Castle Perilous’ by the famous Canadian artist, Elizabeth Forbes (1859-1912) published in 1905. This edition is one of only 350 copies and was published by Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. of Bristol. It contains 28 beautifully illustrated plates, also by Elizabeth Forbes, depicting scenes from within the work. Several of which has been included with this blog.

The National Library of Wales holds an extensive collection of items relating to the legend of King Arthur and continues to add to them. Works dating as far back as the 13th century all the way up to the 21st century are featured in the collection. Eminent authors such as Geoffrey of Monmouth, Thomas Malory and Richard Blackmore are prominent in the collection, along with contemporary authors such as Andrew Beattie, Judith John, and Tracey Mayhew.
