Over the past few months, our cataloguers have been going the full twelve rounds with our hidden collections, unearthing boxing-related titles that were previously off the radar. It’s all part of a project to open our collections and uncover some real knockout treasures. Sadly, no golden championship belts have turned up yet!
Some of these titles are real heavyweights, packing a punch with their historic value- especially since they’re now out of print. They bobbed and weaved their way into our collection between the 1940s and 1950s through legal deposit, only to be left on the ropes, battered and bruised, waiting for their comeback.
These titles have now landed a spot in our catalogue and can be found in a small but mighty collection under GV 1142 X. Here’s a quick jab at what’s on offer:
- How to become a boxer (GV1142 X1).
- Scientific boxing and self defence / by Tommy Burns (GV1142 X16).
- The Complete Boxer / by "Gunner" James Moir (GV1142 X153).
If you’d like to go a few more rounds with our punchy boxing collection, we also have several Welsh-related titles in the mix. So, whether you're a fan of ring legends like Joe Calzaghe and Jimmy Wilde, or just looking to sharpen your self-defence skills, we’ve got publications that will knock your expectations out!
- No ordinary Joe / Joe Calzaghe (2008 XA 2133).
- The story of Welsh boxing : prize fighters of Wales / Lawrence Davies (2018 XA 2323)
- Hitting and Stopping / Jimmy Wilde (Location to be assigned).
This is the perfect time to highlight our range of boxing books, following the exciting news that Lauren Price has successfully unified multiple boxing titles. Her incredible achievement is a testament to skill, dedication, and perseverance—qualities that define the sport at its best. Congratulations, Lauren!
