As part of the events to mark 25 years since the first elections  to the 'National Assembly for Wales' the Welsh Political Archive was invited to take part in a lunchtime event in the Senedd on Wednesday 8 May 2024.

It was a great opportunity for the Library to display some of the treasures in our political archive collections and talk about the important work of the Political Archive with Members of the Senedd and their staff.

Among the items shown were:

  • Leaflets and manifestos from the 1999 Assembly election campaign
  • One of Wyn Roberts' diaries detailing the campaign to create S4C
  • Diary of Philip Weeks, South Wales Director of the National Coal Board during the period of the Miners' Strike 1984-5
  • Letters written by Frances Stevenson, David Lloyd George's secretary, talking about the Versailles Peace Conference
  • Correspondence from Ann Jones regarding the closure of Cymdeithas Plant Cymru

The exhibition stimulated many conversations reminiscing about individuals, campaigns and events of the last quarter of a century.

It was also an opportunity to give advice to Members of the Senedd and their staff on how to manage their records and keep important material for their own archives. In this way, the archives of the past have helped to inspire the archives of the future.
