On 20 May the 'Champion of Champions' quiz for the e-sgol scheme was held at the National Library of Wales. In an exciting and fun-filled day children from Ysgol Mynydd-y-Garreg and Ysgol Treferthyr came to the Library to compete in the final round of the e-sgol Amser Aur quiz.
During the morning, pupils from both schools went on a tour around the building, listening carefully to facts about the Library. Why were they listening carefully? Because some of these facts formed the questions of the e-sgol quiz to select the champions in the afternoon.
A trip to the Library was the prize for coming first in the online Amser Aur Quiz. Following the victory of Ysgol Mynydd-y-Garreg and Ysgol Treferthyr in the online competition, classes from the two schools were invited to the Library to compete in the 'Champion of the Champions' quiz.
During March, over 1,000 pupils took part in the Amser Aur Quiz and a series of online workshops, by the Education Service in partnership with e-sgol to engage with pupils from across Wales.
The theme of the online workshops was 'Welshness', and the Library presented special sessions using items from the collections to celebrate the Welsh language, traditional legends, music, individuals from diverse backgrounds, and iconic events in Welsh history. An exciting digital quiz about the content of the presentations was part of each session.
A teacher from Treferthyr School said:
"What a day! The children were absolutely thrilled to be able to come here to the National Library today, and to see behind the scenes. That was a very special experience. The pupils have enjoyed learning about how the Library looks after some of Wales’s most important treasures, and they loved wandering the gallery – there was a smile on every face.
I would like to thank e-sgol for organising the competition and giving the pupils of Ysgol Treferthyr the opportunity to come to Aberystwyth to represent the school, the Cricieth area and north Wales. Great! Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
Rhodri Morgan Manager of the Education Service at the National Library of Wales said:
“The Education Service at the National Library of Wales works tirelessly to share our work and collections with as many pupils as possible in ways that are engaging to young audiences. This scheme has given us the opportunity to connect with a huge number of children from all across Wales, and doing this in a way that is as fun as possible.”
Congratulations to Ysgol Mynydd-y-Garreg and Ysgol Treferthyr on their success!

About e-sgol
The e-sgol project, which is funded by the Welsh Government, has been running since September 2018, originally to offer opportunities through e-learning to post-14 pupils that would not be available without this innovative provision. The intention is to expand the provision available within schools across Wales, so that a wide choice of qualifications and experiences are available to young people, whether that is in the secondary sector or now in the primary sector as well.
