This calendar was initiated as a result of the Anti-racist Wales Action Plan.
It marks religious, cultural, awareness, diversity and memorial events and bank holidays. The events on the calendar link and display the various items in the Library’s wonderful collection.
The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is marked to celebrate diversity and raise awareness of the issues of racism and discrimination. It was sanctioned by the United Nations in 2002.
The Urdd National Eisteddfod is Welsh-language youth festival held annually. Its focuses on literature, music and arts. It was established in 1922 by Sir Ifan ab Owen Edwards with the aim of promoting and protecting the Welsh language. Organised by Urdd Gobaith Cymru, it has over 90,000 people in attendance annually with 15,000 children and young people participating in its various competitions.
Pride month is dedicated to the celebration and commemoration of LGBTQ+ community.It began after the Stonewall riots of 1969 in America. In this month parades, concerts and various events are held to raise awareness for the equal rights and justice of people who identify as LGBTQ+.
World Refugee Day was enacted on 20 June 2001, as a mark of respect to the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. Organized by the United Nations, it is designed to celebrate refugees all over the world.
The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod is a music festival that takes place annually in the second week of July in Llangollen, North Wales. It is one of numerous big annual Eisteddfodau in Wales. Singers and dancers are invited from all over the world to participate in over twenty competitions, which is followed by a concert at the end of the day. Famous performers at Llangollen have included Luciano Pavarotti.
World Population Day is commemorated to raise awareness of the various issues associated with population such as the importance of family planning, maternal health, poverty and human rights . It was established by the United Nations as a result of the massive interest people had in Five Billion Day in 1987.
Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela,a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician .it is celebrated in appreciation of the 67 years that Nelson Mandela spent fighting for justice, equality and human rights for all.
The National Eisteddfod of Wales is the largest of numerous Eisteddfodau that are held annually in Wales. Considered to be the largest music and poetry festival in Europe with about 150,000 visitor in attendance and over 250 trade stands. The festival travels, alternating between the north and south of Wales. It is the hallmark of the celebration of welsh art, language and culture dating back to as far as 1176.
The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is observed annually to awaken consciousness, defend the rights and environment of the world's indigenous communities around the world. According to the united nation, there are 476 million indigenous peoples in the world living across 90 countries.
International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief is a United Nations-sponsored annual awareness day to speak up against religious bigotry and persecution globally.
