The post of Secretary of State for Wales was created in 1964 although ministers in the Home Office with specific responsibility for Welsh Affairs were first appointed in the 1950s. the responsibilities of the Secretaries of State for Wales were gradually increased until they were mostly transferred to the National Assembly for Wales in 1999. The Secretary of State for Wales now responsible for the overall strategic direction of the UK Government in Wales.
