Bleach is a new electronic music track and video by Right Keys Only, created as part of a creative commission with the Wales Broadcast Archive and Disability Arts Cymru. The commission invited artists to explore the broadcast archive as inspiration for new digital work.
When searching the archive, Right Keys Only came across a news piece from Coleg y Fro, Rhoose about home-making courses for young women. The irony struck: the responsibilities taught mirrored the unseen responsibilities often taken on by young carers. This discovery resonated deeply with her own story.
During childhood, she became the main carer for her mother after she became ill. Bleach reflects these experiences — the weight of adult responsibility, the comments from others (“she’s so grown up for her age”), and the sense of peace found outside the home. The visuals highlight this contrast through shifting colours and stark borders.
The lyrics also carry echoes of Kate Bush’s This Woman’s Work — a song that held huge significance in her family. It was her mother’s favourite, and despite brain damage affecting her memory, she could sing every lyric perfectly while her daughter cooked dinner. The song later became her choice for her own funeral, making its presence in this piece all the more poignant.
Even the title Bleach is rooted in memory: her mother’s OCD meant bleaching the house several times a week. The smell remains a vivid reminder, queasy yet inescapable, shaping the atmosphere of the work.
Blending archive, sound, and personal history, Bleach is a deeply layered reflection on care, loss, resilience, and the cultural narratives that shape our lives.
