The Library’s collection of newspapers covers a wide range of titles with comprehensive coverage of newspapers published in Wales and the Marches after 1911, when the Copyright Act 1911 granted legal deposit rights to the Library. Holdings for newspapers published prior to 1911 are less complete and have been built up by purchases and donations.
The Library aims to collect Welsh regional newspapers, British national and regional newspapers, newspapers from Scotland and Ireland and Welsh newspapers from other countries e.g. USA and Argentina along with some major international titles on microfilm and CD Rom such as El Pais (Spain), Le Monde (France), New York Times (USA).
The Library has an extensive collection of newspapers in hard copy format. It also holds a complete collection of microfilm copies of British regional newspapers produced as part of the Newsplan 2000 Project.
The Library in keeping with the scope offered by modern technology has produced Welsh Newspapers an open access online database of Welsh regional newspapers.
In addition readers’ may access the British Newspapers Archive site free of charge within the National Library.
Most of the newspaper collection has been catalogued and can be found in the Library’s Catalogue. Items can be ordered from the Catalogue for viewing in the Reading Room. Given the fragile nature of newspapers issues available as microfilm or digital surrogates are provided where possible rather than the original.
