In 1563 a law was passed in Wales which instructed the bishops of the Welsh dioceses and the bishop of Hereford to arrange for the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer to be translated into Welsh by March 1567. A translation of the Prayer Book by William Salesbury was published on the 6th of May 1567. His translations were important milestones in the history of Welsh publishing and provided the people of Wales with religious texts in their own language for the first time.
